The 60CSx is a refreshing upgrade of the 60CS, and features a removable microSD card for detailed mapping memory.

The device features the powerful SiRF GPS navigation chip for supreme accuracy in all conditions. You also get an electronic compass and a barometric altimeter.

You also get a large color TFT display and turn-by-turn routing capability. You can use the 60CSx's memory card slot with preprogrammed microSD cards from Garmin (sold separately) that provide topographic maps, city streets, and nautical charts. In fact, the unit is compatible with most Garmin MapSource products including BlueChart, City Navigator, U.S. Topo 24K, and U.S. Topo and Recreational Lakes with Fishing Hot Spots. The unit comes preloaded with an Americas autoroute basemap that provides automatic routing capabilities including highways, exits, and tide data. There's also a preloaded marine point database. You can even get turn-by-turn directions when you're driving, and an integrated trip computer provides odometer, stopped time, moving average, overall average, total time, max speed, and more.

The 60CSx's 2.6-inch, 256-color TFT color display is designed to present mapping and trip information clearly and accurately in any lighting conditions. Plus, the case is lightweight, rugged, and water resistant to IEC 60529 IPX7 standards (can be submerged in one meter of water for 30 minutes). When using two AA alkaline batteries, you'll get up to 20 hours of battery life from the unit. The unit's barometric altimeter system features automatic pressure trend recording while providing current elevation, ascent/descent rate, minimum/maximum elevation, total ascent and descent, and average and maximum ascent and descent rate. Meanwhile, the electronic compass allows you to get accurate headings while standing still.

Another key feature of the 60CSx is the 10,000 point automatic track log; 20 saved tracks (500 points each) let you retrace your path in both directions. There's also a large-numbers option for easy viewing, as well as a dual-position display mode.

The 60CSx's trip computer provides odometer, stopped time, moving average, overall average, total time, max speed, and more. Meanwhile, a fast processor allows the 60CSx to provide quick auto-routing, turn-by-turn directions, and audio alerts when you use the optional MapSource software, which can be stored on the unit's included 64 MB microSD card. Downloading information is quick with the USB or serial port interfaces. Using the dedicated serial port, the 60Cx can share navigation instructions with repeaters, plotters, and autopilots. The four-position rocker pad and dedicated high-use buttons make navigating through the unit's features easy, even when your fingers are cold or wet.

Finally, the GPSMap 60CSx is packed with some extra fun features. An integrated outdoor calendar provides ideal hunting and fishing times, plus moon rise/set/location information. There is a dedicated geocaching mode for those of you into the hot GPS community treasure hunt game. Finally, there are indoor/outdoor GPS games to help you and your friends enjoy the outdoors.

The Garmin GPS 60 CSx Handheld is an excellent product and widely used by the military. It has many outstanding features and can be used effectively for both marine and outdoor use.

Uses two AAs.The box said it came with a 64MB micro SD card. This IS a unit designed for portable use on the trail while on your person. I stick it in my pocket when walking the dog, just to see how far we go as we try different streets and routes in the neighborhood, it's just a fun and fantastic tool. I also use one of their products on my Blackberry screen for protection. Now, back to the hardware.This is NOT a unit designed for navigating in an automobile. The other is the Garmin 4-pin connector.

Unit utilizes WAAS to further improve accuracy.SD card slot: The card required is the Micro SD card. There is a backlight for indoor or low light conditions. Accuracy: Most of the time the unit indicates an accuracy between 7 feet and 9 feet. Battery life is exceptional. I've also had various other gps units in the past, mostly automotive types, so they really don't apply here. I prefer the Garmin connector due to it's design being more resistant to moisture.Bonus uses: If you have mapping software on your laptop computer and that software supports GPS connectivity (i.e. The more light hitting this display the better it looks. I don't get to turned on about this metric since my uses do not require accuracy better than this.

This thing has much more sensitivity than I expected. I have had this unit now for several weeks. You need to understand that this unit comes only with a very limited detail base map. Having tried a few, this is the absolute best one I have tried.

I bought a 4 Gig card, loaded it up with 3.6 gigs of planimetric and topomaps, and use the unit to turn maps on or off depending upon which one I choose to view. Screen: Clear and crisp, good color, very readable. Mine had a 1 Gigabyte card in it. GPS derived altitude is usually not very accurate, but when used with the altimeter sensor, the altitude calculations are pretty darn accurate as far as I can tell.

Bonus.Case: tough, attractive, water-proof, and a great size to fit just about any hand. My review here is all about the unit, not maps. Indoors, under tree canopies, in your pocket, in the car, in the truck, it don't matter. Man, what a difference. It fits in a socket that lies just under the batteries. This is an OUTDOOR unit, it is designed to have direct sunlight on the display.

The unit also has an electronic compass which is a really cool bell and whistle. One is via the USB port, utilizing the 5 volts DC available on any USB line or USB charger. My previous handheld was the old GPSMap 76s. There are also two more ways to power the unit. Sweet.Powering the unit: Of course the internal batteries are the main power source. Set-up is a snap for experienced users, and novices will find the unit intuitive and quick to learn.Sensitivity: I've never seen anything like this unit when it comes to snagging sats.

Do yourself a favor when on the trail and carry a real compass.Silva grade or better.The unit comes with some Trip and Waypoint management software as well.So anyway, that's about it for my review of the 60CSX. Get it and be done with it, you won't be sorry.Operation: Straight forward Garmin-style buttons and menus. Detailed maps are available from Garmin or from OTHER sources. He loves it. This is a great handheld GPS unit. I bought it for my husband to use in the woods and on the snowmobile trails. It has so many features and he is still learning new things to do with it. I would recommend this and would buy it again.

This is a great product. I found this product to be outstanding overseas. When you don't have a cell phone with Google Maps for location services the Garmin GPS 60CSx is a great a tool for getting around in remote locations. Maybe someday they will create an economical satellite phone with great GPS device like the Garmin 60CSx for remote overseas locations.

This GPS is great. Just bought the 24K Topographic Map, also through Amazon.com, and when we go riding we have a track of where we went. We do alot of back trail riding and plan on making maps of our excursions in the woods. Best purchase I've made in awhile.
